So I took a ride down a small portion of Covingtin Pike today on the way to O'Charleys, and I noticed something. Sunrise Pontiac Buick GMC was before known as the "Ugliest Building on Covington Pike" due to it's horrible orange paint job. Years ago, my dad bought his truck from there, and I couldn't help but notice anything but the building itself. All of the parts and service buildings were all orange with white lettering. But today, that bright, luminescent color has been changed. There's now a nice white coat of paint over all of the buildings with a black stripe along the top. The buildings look nice, but I got to thinking about something. You didn't even have to say the name of the dealership to let people know where you were talking about. Now what will the guy doing the commercials call it? I can surely name off a few uglier buildings now on that stretch of street. What do you think is the ugliest building now? Leave your opinion as a comment on this post.
If you aren't from the Memphis area, Covington Pike is THE place to go if you wanted to buy a car. This stretch of asphault has everything, from Ford, Chevy, Volvo, Kia, VW, Dodge, and even Lotus and Porsche. I've personally worked for two dealerships on the pike, but sold cars on over a quarter length of the street. Gossett Motor Cars owns 5 buildings (that are in operation) and is currently renting one, all located right where Sunrise is at the end of the pike. Jim Keras owns 5 buildings as well on the pike. I worked for Gossett for a while, explored other options, and ended up back on the pike at another dealership which has a rich history on the pike, and actually made national history. Saturn of Memphis, located right on the edge of the car lots on the pike, is the very first location chosen to launch the Saturn brand. While the dealership is the site of the first groundbreaking, it was not completed in time to become the first operational Saturn dealership. Saturn is also the first brand to introduce a "No Haggle" sales strategy. In any case, the facility is very nice and has a great management staff. Saturn of Memphis, Germantown and Jackson are all owned by a powerful name in car sales here in Memphis. The Gwatney organization has owned a few brands of vehicle, but have scaled back and changed their main focus on the Saturn franchise. Most noticeable for drivers here in Memphis, Gwatney Chevrolet changed hands to Jim Keras here recently.
As for me, I got out of the car business for a few different reasons. I would say, however, that it is a fun and rather exciting business. If you have good people skills and know how to negitiate, it's an awesome position for you. And if you ever wanted to get into it, or if you want to buy a new or used car, Covington Pike should be your first (and more than likely your last) stop. And if you ever happen to stop by Saturn of Memphis, be sure to say hi to Greg.
